Non-Degree Studies

The right to complete non-degree studies may be granted to applicants not enrolled at the University of Helsinki as degree students. Applicants may be granted the right to complete as non-degree studies a maximum of four courses included in the Bachelor of Laws or Master of Laws degrees. The courses Foundations of legal thinking and Practical skills cannot be completed as non-degree studies. The right to pursue non-degree studies will not be granted for courses available at the Open University during the term following the application period.  The right to pursue non-degree studies will not be granted to students enrolled in the Faculties of Law at the University of Turku or the University of Lapland, unless they are applying to complete a course that is unavailable at their own faculty.

Students pursuing non-degree studies are not enrolled at the University of Helsinki, and, consequently, do not enjoy the same benefits as enrolled students do. Students admitted to pursue non-degree studies do not have the right to complete a degree at the University.  The right to complete non-degree studies applies only to those studies for which the study right was granted.

Should the student later obtain the right to complete a degree at the Faculty, the Faculty shall decide on the recognition of non-degree studies.

Students must apply in writing for the right to complete non-degree studies at the Faculty of Law by submitting an application form. Completed applications forms must be returned to the Faculty Office. The application deadlines are 30 April, 30 August and 31 October. The Faculty decides on the granting of the study right after consulting with the relevant teacher and evaluating the grounds given by the applicant in the application.  When making the decision, the Faculty will also consider the resources of the discipline and the applicant’s qualifications for the studies. The right to complete non-degree studies will be granted on an annual basis.

Eligible applicants for the right to complete non-degree studies include:
a) students from another university, university of applied sciences or other educational institution who intend to incorporate the completed studies into a degree to be awarded by the home institution (the application must be accompanied by a study plan approved by the home institution),
b) graduates from universities or secondary-level institutes who wish to upgrade their degrees or qualifications (the application must be accompanied by a copy of the diploma and a statement describing the objectives of and grounds for the non-degree studies),
c) professionals wishing to upgrade their qualifications (the application must be accompanied by a statement by the employer or by another well-grounded account of the relevance of the studies for upgrading professional competence),
d) Open University students, provided the studies applied for are unavailable at the Open University. Such applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 ECTS credits of legal studies at the Open University by the closing of the application period (applications must be accompanied by a certificate of studies at the Open University and a statement describing the objectives of and grounds for the non-degree studies).

The applicant may also include other supporting documents with the application.

Students admitted to pursue non-degree studies will receive a study card indicating the studies for which the study right has been granted as well as the validity of this right. Completed credits will be recorded on this card also. A transcript on completed non-degree studies and a certificate for a completed course will be provided upon request.

Non-degree studies are subject to a charge. Students completing studies within the framework of the JOO Flexible study right scheme to be incorporated into their degrees pay no fees.
