About the subject

In Latin studies, the student becomes acquainted with the Latin language, Roman literature, and ancient, especially Roman, culture, with aspects of their heritage, and with research done in these fields. As in the case of Classical Greek, Latin studies are in principle focussed on the classical period, but students will have to face, and deal with, mediaeval and later Latin texts, and may choose to put the emphasis on studies primarily dealing with Later, and Late Latin. As the later periods of the history of the Latin language are included in the teaching and study of Latin, this means that Latin studies, as practised in the University of Helsinki, cover a period of over 2500 years from the earliest documents written in Latin until the 19th century, and occasionally even later.
