Pedagogical courses

The Helsinki University Centre for Research and Development of Higher Education offers courses in University Pedagogy for staff members in English:

  • University Pedagogy I (10 credits) starts in spring 2010. The course includes the following study modules: YP 1.1 Teaching and learning in higher education (5 credits) and YP 1.2 Design, implementation and assessment of teaching (5 credits).
    The course dates are: January 15th, January 22, February 17, March 11 and 19 (half a day), April 8-9, April 14 (half a day) and April 19th, 2010. Course days start at 9 am and finish at 4 pm, unless informed otherwise.

    How to apply: the application time has ended. Information about the next Unversity Pedagogy I course will be available in these pages, later on.

    The 10 credit course is designed for teachers who wish to develop their teaching skills and their understanding of student learning. The aim of the course is to provide university teachers the basic principles of learning and instruction in Higher Education. The participants acquaint themselves with the university as learning and teaching environment. Contents include learning and studying in Higher Education, curriculum planning and assessment of learning and teaching.

    A variety of teaching methods are utilised during the course. Between the contact days participants work independently and in peer groups. Studying in the course requires active participation both during contact sessions and in peer-group work. Each participant also provides a short teaching demonstration in connection to one of the learning tasks during the course. Full attendance during the contact days is required.
    The length of the course, 10 credits, equals to circa 260 hours of study.
    The maximum number of participants is 20, minimum 12.

    A new course starts in spring 2010 for those English speaking teachers who have already completed the University Pedagogy I course:
  • Supervision and Guidance in Higher Education (5 credits) in spring 2010
    Course dates: 26.4., 3.5., 10.5. and 24.5.2010. Location: City centre, Siltavuorenpenger.
    Participants will become acquainted with university-level guidance and supervision systems and processes as well as with various other methods and means of guidance and supervision.
    Prerequisite: University Pedagogy I

    Both courses are primarily intended for full-time university lecturers, professors, and assistants with teaching obligations but with limited or no prior pedagogical training. We also welcome part-time teachers, but they should have at least 14 hours of work/week at the university. Persons on maternity, nursing or alternation leave may apply.
    These courses are targeted for teachers who are not native Finnish/Swedish speakers. Teachers in other universities may apply, if there is an agreement between the institution and the Centre.
