Who was Christina?
Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689), whose realm also included Finland, was the founder of the University of Helsinki, the then Royal Academy of Turku. The Institute for Gender Studies is named after her in recognition of her importance in the University's history. Queen Christina abdicated in 1654 and moved to Rome, establishing three more academies in the thirty years she lived there. She was a learned, European-minded cultural figure, also called Minerva of the North and the Patroness of Arts and Sciences.
