Textbook Svenska utifrån, Lärobok i svenska (Nyborg, 2001), Svenska utifrån övningar del 1 (Kalmström, 1995) and handouts given by the teacher. Svensk-engelsk & svensk-tysk ordlista (Crozier, 1996) is recommended.

Objective:

After the course the student will be able to express his/her views and opinions on simple topics. The student will be able to manage in various daily-life situations and dealings with, for instance, the authorities in Sweden.

Contents:

This course is the first module in a one-year course intended to provide beginners with skills in both oral and written Swedish. Everyday topics are practised such as presentations, telephone conversations, shopping, etc. Basic grammar skills such as nominal phrases in the singular and the plural, word order in main clauses, verbs in the present tense are acquired. The participant is required to regularly attend classes, do written home work assignments and actively participate in class room oral practising. Chapters 1 - 35 in Svenska utifrån are covered.

The participant will be able to function in most everyday situations, making use of present and past tense as well as modal constructions, expressing wishes and permission etc. The participant will also be able to carry out simple conversations dealing with issues related to society, history and politics. The participant will be able to write simple letters and messages in Swedish.

This course is the second module in a one-year course intended to provide beginners with skills in both oral and written Swedish. Everyday topics are practised such as talking about personal experiences, one's own family, shopping, health etc. Grammar skills such as personal and possessive pronouns, definite and indefinite nominal phrases in the singular and the plural, word order in main clauses, verbs in the past tense and imperative are mastered, as well as modal verb constructions.The student is required to regularly attend classes, do written home work assignments and actively participate in class room oral practising. Chapters 36 - 75 in Svenska utifrån are covered.

All the verb tenses are covered, modal verb constructions, subordinate clauses are dealt with. Participants do various reading, listening, discussion exercises. To obtain the ECTS regular attendance is required as well as active participation in class-room work/discussions and passing the final test.

The participants' knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, oral and writing skills will be such that he/she is able to express his/her opinions and views on topics related to various issues in society. The participant will be able to write short texts relating to his/her fields of interest or studies. He/she will be able to use all the basic structures in his/her speech, with fair fluency and range of vocabulary.

This course is the fourth module in a one-year course intended to provide beginners with skills in both oral and written Swedish. The chapters 116-150 in the course book Svenska utifrån are mainly covered. Swedish grammar is on the whole mastered. The participants do various reading, listening and discussion exercises. To obtain the ECTS regular attendance is required as well as active participation in class-room work/discussions and passing the final test (oral and written).
