Library Rules

The library facilities are divided into zones and colour-coded to indicate whether they are silent areas, working spaces or social and recreational facilities.

Instructions for use of the premises are summarized in the library rules. Other rules, such as the rights and responsibilities of the customer as well as the library, you'll find in the Helsinki University Library Terms of Use.

Green zone: Social spaces, discussion allowed

Recreational spaces

  • Informal working areas.
  • Eating allowed. Keep the areas tidy, clean up afterwards.
  • Phone calls will be made on the designated phone locations or somewhere aside, so you do not disturb others.
Group study rooms

  • The group facilities are available for use during the library opening hours.
  • The group facilities can only be reserved by the students and staff of the University of Helsinki.
  • All group study rooms are reserved with the HU Office 365 calendar.
  • Reserving the facilities for teaching, public meetings etc. is not permitted. 
  • The facilities are for groups – you may not reserve the space for your personal use.
  • The maximum period for a reservation is 2 hours/group.
  • A reservation expires in 30 minutes if none of the members of the group has showed up.
  • You may use the space temporarily if it is not reserved. However, users who have made a reservation always take precedence.
  • Keep the group study rooms tidy, clean up afterwards.

Orange zone: Working spaces, quiet talk allowed

  • Keep your voice at a library-appropriate level.
  • Some of the reading tables are intended for University of Helsinki students, researchers and staff exclusively.
  • Take care of your belongings, watch out for thieves. Make also sure your belongings don't take over the places near you. 
  • When using a reading table you may leave for a short period, but no longer than 30 minutes.
    • Mark your place and tell the time of departure. Tag only is not enough to mark the place.
    • If you are away for more than half an hour, other customer is authorized to take your place and remove your belongings aside. Library staff can't be asked to do it.
    • The Library is not responsible for things you leave behind at the reading place.

Red zone: Silent spaces, all devices on mute

  • Be considerate and let the other visitors work in peace.
  • Keep all your devices completely on mute, work quietly.
  • Some of the silent reading areas are intended for University of Helsinki students, researchers and staff exclusively.
  • Silent reading room on the 2nd floor of the Kaisa House is reserved for work without laptops, in other silent areas it is allowed to use laptops.
