The Centre for Chemistry Education
The Centre for Chemistry Education, Kemma, is located within the University of Helsinki’s Department of Chemistry. The main objectives of Kemma is to support in-service and pre-service chemistry teachers in increasing the standard of learning and competence in chemistry, and also to develop chemistry education and chemistry education research, keeping in mind the need to increase the interest towards the subject itself. The Centre for Chemistry Education collaborates with administrative authorities, schools and educational institutes, museums, media, industry, and different organizations.
Kemma is part of the National LUMA Centre for science education.
Kemma, situated at the Unit of Chemistry Teacher Education, has a library of books, newspapers, journals and other literature related to chemistry and chemistry education, as well as computer programs, teaching tools and other resources to cater for the needs of teachers and prospective teachers. In addition, plenty of material can be found online our web page. This material includes, for instance, the Doctoral and Master’s theses completed at the Unit of Chemistry Teacher Education, links to interesting Internet sites and practical tips for chemistry lessons.
Kemma coordinates collaborative project called ChemistryLab Gadolin. ChemistryLab Gadolin is a hub for study visits and activities that support the learning and teaching of chemistry that aims to increase the interest towards chemistry and awareness of its vast potential.
Make a donation to support LUMA activities!
Our aim is to get children and youth inspired by LUMA subjects and technology. LUMA is an abbreviation from the Finnish words “luonnontieteet”, i.e. natural sciences, and “matematiikka”, mathematics. We established LUMA Fund in order to motivate children and youth into studying these subjects and find the joy of LUMA on their spare time as well.
