Physical chemistry is the study of the physical and fundamental basis of chemical systems and processes. Thus it stands at the base of all chemistry and provides invaluable information about the fundamental properties of molecules and their reactions with one another. This research is conducted on all the three important fronts of modern science: experimental, computational and theoretical.

Research topics of the laboratory include laser and infrared spectroscopy, solid state photochemistry and dynamics, theoretical molecular physics, computational quantum chemistry, theory of magnetic resonance, reaction kinetics and combustion chemistry. Particular emphasis is put on the development of new laser spectroscopic techniques, on the application of modern mathematical theories to molecular problems, on the theory and computation of spectral parameters both in optical and magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and on the detection of new rare-gas containing molecular species.

The laboratory is a part of the Finnish Center of Excellence in Computational Molecular Science.
