Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry is a key instrumental technique in the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry. New methods and instrumentation for environmental and bioanalysis are the main areas of interest. Systems are developed for interfacing electromigration techniques to a mass spectrometer in both capillary and microchip formats. Important instrumental projects of the Laboratory are the construction of an aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer for obtaining real-time information on the chemical composition of fine atmospheric particles, and the construction of an ion mobility spectrometer and hyphenated ion mobility spectrometer–mass spectrometer for fundamental studies on atmospheric pressure ionisation techniques and fast environmental analysis and bioanalysis. Applications of liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in environmental studies are a further interest, e.g. for chemical characterisation of aerosol particles.
