Bioanalyst / Senior Laboratory Technologist

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM, www.fimm.fi ) was established in 2007 as a partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (www.embl.org ) together with the new Nordic nodes for molecular medicine in Norway and Sweden. FIMM is a joint venture of the University of Helsinki, the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. FIMM laboratories are located in a brand new state-of-the-art Biomedicum Helsinki 2 research building on the Meilahti medical campus in Helsinki.
FIMM is seeking for a
Bioanalyst / Senior Laboratory Technologist (1 - 2)
We are looking for a highly motivated individual(s) with excellent technical and interpersonal skills starting on 1 December 2009 or as agreed for a 2 year period in FIMM-EMBL Group Leader Denis Kainov’s (PhD) group and in FIMM General Operations under supervision of Director Olli Kallioniemi.
Tasks of the technician in Dr Denis Kainov’s research group include helping with the technical aspects of the research projects of the group and carrying out research experiments.
Main activities
• Properly conduct the experiments in relation with group members
• Participate in the required experiments in order to achieve the objectives of the project
• Suggest new ideas that respect the protocol in order to help the researcher implement the project
• Participate in the management and analysis of the data
• Present the results obtained in a relevant and concise way
• Carry out research on technical matters and implement these techniques in the laboratory with the help of researchers
• Provide expertise to the investigators
• Be responsible of the organization of the laboratory (stock management, update of the database)

Main professional relations
• Functional reporting line: Researcher, Senior Researcher
• Internal: team work with colleagues. Work with other technicians in order to explore possible synergies
Scientific competence, Work experience
• Outstanding technical skills in virology are required (BSL2/P2 lab)
• Experience in drug testing in tissue culture is an advantage
• Basic computational skills
• Master, diploma in research engineering or equivalent diploma in Cellular biology, Biochemistry or Virology is an asset
• Languages: fluent command of English, knowledge of Finnish
Tasks of the technician in FIMM general operations include but are not limited to
Main activities
• Equipment purchases, installations and organizing of the user training
• Helping new group leaders with their laboratory setup
• Coordinating construction work for new laboratory operations
• Administrative task e.g. follow up of infrastructure budgets
• Conducting the adapting of key aspects such as safety regulations, chemical inventories, GMO permit applications
Obligations
• Following the local laws, rules and regulations
Main professional relations
•The technician will work closely with both research groups and administrative personnel
• Creating and interacting with a support network of technical personnel and suppliers
Scientific competence, Work experience
• Broad experience in research laboratories; extensive knowledge of technologies and equipment used in research fields
• Organization and multitasking skills are a must
• Fluent in Finnish and English
The person hired will work 50% in the Kainov lab and 50% in general operations. A potential second laboratory technologist may be hired at a later time. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the University salary system.
