ANIWEL Graduate School is funded by the Finnish Academy. Two closely related research areas are interconnected in the ANIWEL graduate school: animal welfare and clinical veterinary medicine.

Main research interests
Animal welfare: In order to fully understand animal welfare it is essential to use a multidisciplinary approach. In the centre of the interest is species specific behaviour, adaptation to the man-made environment as well as cognitive capabilities of animals. Development and use of methods and techniques to measure animal welfare are necessary. Stress and pain are crucial elements in animal health and welfare. Animal policy, animal ethics, and their practical applications in animal protection legislation are of major importance.

Clinical veterinary medicine: Research in veterinary medicine will be strongly emphasized. It will include any aspect of preventing, diagnosing, and curing reduced health conditions in animals, both those treated individually and those treated in flocks. Preventive medicine is ethically and economically preferred in remedy when ever possible.

Ideally projects cover both research interests. Multidisciplinary projects are welcome.
