Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (GSBM, http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/biotechgs/) is an international PhD programme administered by the Biocentrum Helsinki Research Organisation and the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki. GSBM graduate school operates at the Viikki and Meilahti Campuses and provides a high quality four-year PhD training programme focusing on biotechnology, molecular biology and systems biology. The Dean of GSBM is Professor Pekka Lappalainen.
Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (GSBM) invites applications for
Doctoral Student positions
starting on January 1, 2010. GSBM offers twenty (20) four-year doctoral training positions for the period 2010-2013.
GSBM provides an excellent PhD training programme, including up-to-date courses in a wide range of subjects related to molecular biology, cell biology and biotechnology. The training opens career possibilities not only in academia but also in administration and in industry utilising biotechnology. Students choose their PhD project together with their supervisors. A three-member thesis committee is appointed to each student to support and monitor the progress of the PhD project. The goal is to achieve the PhD degree within the four-year graduate school period.
The Doctoral Student positions are open for applicants with a Master’s level degree in biology, medicine, natural sciences or other suitable field. Applicants selected should start their PhD project on January 1, 2010, and register as doctoral students at the University of Helsinki by the end of June, 2010. Undergraduate students are welcome to apply if their Master Thesis/Diploma/ProGradu has been completed. The MSc degree (or equivalent) must be completed by the end of June 2010 at the latest.
The salary for the present positions will be based on levels 1 - 4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
An ideal application should:
1) Demonstrate that the applicant is motivated and has potential to develop into an independent researcher.
2) Demonstrate that the applicant will significantly benefit from the four-year PhD training programme.
3) Contain a scientifically significant and feasible thesis project.
4) Propose a research group which is a member of the Biocentrum Helsinki Research Organisation (http://www.helsinki.fi/biocentrum/) or represents other outstanding research groups at the Helsinki region, can provide adequate scientific training and supervision, and actively participates in developing the curriculum of GSBM.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The online application form and the instructions will be available at http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/biotechgs/. Please carefully read the GSBM-specific admission requirements and make sure all the formal criteria for GSBM admission are met, before applying. Applications may be submitted starting on September 14th, 2009, and the application deadline is October 2nd, 2009 at 3.45 p.m. (local Helsinki time).
1. Application (submission deadline Oct 2nd, 2009)
The applications are submitted online and are welcome 14.9.-2.10.2009. The online application includes 1) the application form filled by the student, and 2) the ‘Agreement of Supervision’ form filled by the supervisor. Both forms must be filled for the application to be valid. No applications or supervisor’s forms submitted after the deadline are accepted. An evaluation panel will score all applications.
2. Evaluation of submitted applications
A pre-selected evaluation panel with representatives from Biocentrum Helsinki Research groups and an external expert will score all applications. Some applicants may be invited for an interview at the beginning of November.
3. Decisions (late Nov, 2009)
Following the evaluation process the panel will make a proposal for student selection to the GSBM Board. All applicants will be informed of the selection result by e-mail. The list of students accepted into the GSBM PhD training programme will also be published at GSBM web pages http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/biotechgs/.
