Mailing list



If you encounter problems with the list, contact the webmaster. The contact info can be found on the Board page.

To send mail to the mailing list:

  1. Create your email message.
  2. Type sub-ry@helsinki.fi into the receiver field.
  3. Send your message.

To subscribe to the mailing list:

  1. Create a new email message.
  2. If you are sending the email from the same address that you want to be subscribed to the mailing list with:
    1. Type majordomo@helsinki.fi into the receiver field.
    2. Leave the subject field blank. This is essential!
    3. Enter only the words subscribe sub-ry into the message body.
    4. Send the message.
  3. If you want to subscribe some other email address than the one from which you are sending the message:
    1. Type majordomo@helsinki.fi into the receiver field.
    2. Leave the subject field blank. This is essential!
    3. Enter only the words subscribe sub-ry my.name@mydomain.net into the message body. Here the 'my.name@mydomain.net' is the address you wish to subscribe.
    4. Send the message.

To unsubscribe from the mailing list:

  1. Create a new email message.
  2. Type majordomo@helsinki.fi into the receiver field.
  3. Enter only the words unsubscribe sub-ry my.name@mydomain.net into the message body. Here the 'my.name@mydomain.net' is the address you wish to unsubscribe.
If even after following these instructions you can't unsubscribe from the list, check that you wrote your e-mail address correctly. Especially if you're an older student, the ending of your address might be @mappi.helsinki.fi instead of just @helsinki.fi, and correcting that usually solves the problem.

Some guidelines:

  1. Do not add attachments to your posts to the mailing list. The list will not forward such mails. Everything you wish to add/type to the mail has to be in raw data. For similar reasons, please avoid excessive use of formatting (e.g. bolding, underlining, etc.) since some of the receivers' mail clients don't support such features.
  2. Do not type "SUB" into the subject field or as the first word of the message body. SUB is also a command to the mailing list, and posts with that word will be regarded as operating posts, not regular mailing list posts, and will not be forwarded.
  3. Remember that the list has many viewers, so keep your messages brief and to the point. Personal communication and correspondence can be handled through other media.
  4. It would be helpful to have the main topic of your post in the subject field, so that people will immediately know whether to discard the mail or actually read it (e.g. 'Translation job offer' is far more appealing than 'Plz read this, thx!').
  5. The use of common sense is appreciated.
