Matthias Calonius Society was founded by Finnish legal historians and officially registered in Helsinki in 1990. Matthias Calonius Society has about forty members at the moment, comprising most of those Finns who do active research in the field.

The Society's aims, as written down in its rules, are to promote research in the field of legal history and advance the general familiarity with legal history. This is done among other things by organizing yearly lectures and giving out publications. So far, two books have appeared in the series Publications of Matthias Calonius Society.
