Bialowiezan metsä uhattuna - Bialowieza forest under threat

Bialowiezan metsä on yksi harvoista vielä jäljellä olevista, laajoista metsäalueista Euroopassa. Se muistuttaa ajoista, jolloin metsät peittivät vielä suurta osaa Euroopasta. 1500 neliökilometrin laajuinen alue on tärkeä biodiversiteetin säilyttämiseksi – monet harvinaiset tai muualta kadonneet lajit elävät vielä Bialowiezassa.

Alueen ainutlaatuisuudesta huolimatta se on ollut hakkuiden kohteina jo vuosikymmenien ajan. Viime aikoina hakkuut ovat kiihtyneet, minkä seurauksena tutkijat useista maista ovat ilmaisseet huolensa tämän korvaamattoman alueen puolesta. Myös monissa suomalaisissa yliopistoissa ja tutkimuslaitoksissa on ryhdytty valmistelemaan vetoomuksia Bialowiezan puolesta. Suomalaiset tutkijat ovat jo vuosien ajan tehneet yhteistyötä Bialowiezan suojelualueen kanssa, muun muassa istuttamalla alueelle uudelleen ilveksiä.

Voit osallistua joko lähettämällä oman kirjeen Puolan ja Valko-Venäjän viranomaisille (mallikirje sivun alalaidassa) tai allekirjoittamalla Helsingin yliopiston luonnonsuojeluyhdistyksen koordinoiman yhteisen kirjeen. Ota jälkimmäisessä tapausessa yhteyttä Jenni Hottolaan (jenni.hottola(at)helsinki.fi) ennen perjantaita 3.2.

Bialowieza forest under threat

Bialowieza forest is one of the last large (1500 km2) remaining fragments of natural or near-natural deciduous forest of the northern temperate zone in Europe. A relic of vast forests that once covered the European lowlands. It is an European biodiversity hotspot; a home to many species that are rare or extinct elsewhere.

Since World War I, this scientifically, ecologically and culturally precious forest has been harvested for short-term profits. Despite acknowledging the importance of protecting biodiversity especially in those areas having mostly maintained their high conservation values, loggings in Bialowieza forest are increasing. Researches from several countries have expressed their concern for the destruction of this irreplaceable area. Also in Finland, pleas are being prepared in several universities and research institutes.

Helsinki University Nature Conservation Society (Helsingin yliopiston luonnonsuojeluyhdistys) is preparing an appeal to be sent to politicians in Poland and Belarus.

We will collect the signatures on the following week (Mon 6th Feb onwards).
