Italian is the language of one of the oldest civilisations in Europe. Competence in it opens the door to, for instance, the study of European music, fine arts, history and the antiquity.

The term ’philology’ in the name of the discipline should be understood in its broad sense: it refers to the study of Italian and its literature, examining the development of the language during the last millennium, and analyzing the mechanisms by which the language and Italy’s linguistic situation have become what they are today.
