Helsinki Insight projects
Numerous questions concern us all. There are problems, whose solutions affect our lives, and possibilities that will change the future when realised. The University of Helsinki is active in the effort to build our future society and has defined taking social responsibility to an ever increasing measure as a strategic goal. The university provides insights and solutions based on multidisciplinary research in the following focus areas. Read more about the Helsinki Insight projects >

Environment
The project on environment focuses specifically on two themes: climate change and the Baltic Sea. Both of these questions are of international importance, and to raise awareness of these issues and increase scientific and corporate cooperation we have founded the Global Change Academy.
-
Global welfare
Our focus on global welfare has its roots in the Nordic countries. Within the project other important questions are raised such as Russia’s changing political and economical climate, cultural diversity within nation states and local communities in a globalised world.
-
Health
The start of each life is crucial, and the life subsequently lead depends to a large extent on our healthiness. If we know more about the individual genetics of each person, diseases can also be treated more effectively. Likewise, the birth is likely the most dangerous moment in a child’s life.
-
Learning environments
Students need libraries which fill their ever-increasing need of information. Learning environments need better facilities and easier access to information, and the new Kaisa House-library attempts to fulfil these needs. Earlier in life learning environments are also dependent on teachers – for this reason the university is focusing on developing the teacher education to better suit the globalised world’s needs.
