Ways to give
An endowed professorship – a gift for science
Endowing a professorship through a new fund is a productive investment in the promotion of important pioneering research or the birth of a completely new field of research. A permanent professorship can be founded by establishing a new fund with a donation of approximately €1.5 million. The university commits to paying an annual return on the donation, which will cover the expenses of the new professorship. A fixed-term five-year professorship can be founded with a donation of approximately €500,000. The donor will designate the specific field of the professorship together with the university; the university will appoint the professor.
Basic capital donation – invest in the future
All donations to the Future Fund increase the strategic basic capital of the university. The profit from the basic capital is used to implement strategic projects important to the future of the university. The University of Helsinki offers basic capital donors a place on the Future Fund advisory board. In this way, donors can stay up-to-date on the latest research.
An anniversary donation – pay it forward
You can commemorate a birthday, a graduation or a retirement by accepting gifts in the form of donations to the University of Helsinki. Such donations will be used to promote research and to support students in a field of science important to the person forwarding the gifts.
A donation fund will carry your name into history
Establishing a donation fund is a wonderful way to support a cause close to your heart. When capital is donated, the university establishes a fund that carries the name of the donor and commits to paying an annual return of 5-7% on the capital. Together with the University of Helsinki Funds, the donor will fill in a deed of donation and establish rules to designate the purpose of the fund. The administrative committee will allocate the returns from the fund according to the wishes of the donor.
A bequest – donating a life’s work
A bequest is a wonderful opportunity to make a significant difference with the assets we leave behind. The university commits to allocating the bequest according to the wishes of the donor as defined in his or her testament. The bequeathed assets will be allocated through a fund carrying the name of the donor. The fund rules will be established on the basis of the testament. Donors may access the know-how of university experts both in writing their testament and in designating a cause for their donation.
Direct donations – a one-time donation for your chosen cause
It is possible to make a one-time or a fixed-term donation in support of a specific cause. The donation can be made in the form of a scholarship, a single award or by sponsoring, for example, a new study hall (in honour of the donor) or a conference. A direct donation is one way of gaining on-campus visibility in university communities and in the university media. One example of direct donations is the campaign Donate a textbook. Read more >
Material donations – objects and collections
Material donations contribute significantly to expanding the collections of the university library and museums. Material donations from private persons, enterprises and communities significantly supplement the existing collections of the university, support research and education, and promote exhibition activities. The university library and museums are happy to accept book and collection donations as well as other material relevant to their operations. Even the smallest donations may be significant to the university or represent an immeasurably valuable addition to a collection.
