Teaching at the University of Helsinki is closely linked with research. The rule of thumb is that every teacher is a researcher, and vice versa.

The university provides instruction in about 300 subjects and study programmes. There are 35,000 degree students. Approximately 4,500 Master's degrees and almost 500 Doctorates are carried out each year.

According to an international assessment, the instruction provided by the University of Helsinki is of high European level. The university's teachers have received excellent feedback for their commitment to their work.

Being a research-oriented university, the University of Helsinki deems it important that the majority of its students obtain a Master's degree. Diverse minor subject studies continues to be one of the quality factors of degrees taken at the University of Helsinki.

Besides degree studies, the University of Helsinki annually provides about 60,000 people with adult education. The Open University organises university education, pursuant to the degree requirements of the University of Helsinki, available for everyone, and the Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education provides supplementary education in different disciplines of the University of Helsinki.
