Interaction with society

Taking responsibility at the national and international levels.

The University of Helsinki takes social responsibility, advocates science, and is a recognised partner for cooperation.

In the 2010–2012 strategy term, the university will reinforce its societal interaction. The university will clarify the content of its social responsibility, develop the leadership required by societal interaction, and will further specify its interest group policy.

More active societal interaction will strengthen the operational preconditions of the university. This means the resources for research and teaching, the reputation of the university, good cooperation networks, premium-quality service concepts, success factors in student and staff recruitment, as well as financing. From competition and cooperation, the university will build a balanced package for itself and its partners

Interaction with the university will also reinforce the operational preconditions of the surrounding society, business sector and partners. Specialists in various fields, who hold a high-quality degree, are the university's most effective input into society. The university's representatives work in expert posts in decision-making, participate in public debate, and raise awareness of scientific information, while promoting the establishment of a fair well-being society and the preservation of the national cultural heritage.

The university also takes global responsibility. University researchers are involved in solving global issues and providing instruction for citizens of developing countries, as well as participating in the development of these countries' education and educational systems.

The key measures in 2010–2012 for reinforcing the operational preconditions of societal interaction:

  1. Specifying and managing a policy of societal interaction
  2. Strengthening alumni activities and fund-raising
  3. Developing communication on societal interaction, and promoting science
  4. Participating in regional cooperation
