Tutkimusta
- The Environmental Change Research Unit (ECRU)
The ECRU, headed by Atte Korhola, forms one of the many research groups at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences being an integral part of its Division of Aquatic Sciences. The central research theme in the ECRU is the development and application of hydrobiological, palaeoecological and computational techniques to provide historical perspectives to ecological and environmental change. - The Ecological Genetics Research Group (EGRU)
Academy Professor Juha Merilä heads the group. Main interests are currently in the following projects: Evolutionary and ecological genetics of wild vertebrate populations, Amphibian ultraviolet-B radiation tolerance, Local adaptation and amphibian pH tolerance, Effects of agriculture on amphibian populations and Population biology of the common frog in the subarctic. - The Metapopulation Research Group (MRG)
Professor Ilkka Hanski heads the group that was established at the University of Helsinki in 1992. MRG conducts research on the biology of species inhabiting fragmented landscapes. MRG's strength in research is the ability to combine ecological, molecular, computational, and theoretical approaches in the same projects. - Ilmakehätieteiden ja geofysiikan osasto, Division of Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysics
Atmospheric sciences cover physical, meteorological and chemical processes in the atmosphere. The division focuses on: Atmospheric aerosols: climate change and health effects. Micrometeorology: interactions between ecosystem and the atmosphere, carbon sinks. Meteorological modelling: climate research, development of weather forecast models, Martian gas sphere. Weather radar: development of radar measurements.
- Geofysiikan tutkimus, Geophysics unit
Geophysics is studying events in solid earth, cryosphere and hydrosphere. Main activities of the Geophysics unit: teaching and education, basic research with outreach to applied sciences, collaboration with the private sector
- Quaternary palaeoclimatological research
Rresearch aims at better understanding of past climatological and environmental dynamics in terrestrial, lacustrine and atmospheric realms. Research approaches combine the novel quantitative techniques and various forms of proxy data in order to reconstruct past climate changes and associated atmospheric circulation dynamics. An extra motivation is the importance of this knowledge in the use of climate modellers and in assessing future climate scenarios. - Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study, iLEAPS
Aerosolifysiikan professori Markku Kulmala on nimitetty kansainvälisen ilmakehän ja globaalimuutoksen tutkimusprojektin iLEAPSin puheenjohtajaksi seuraavaksi kolmeksi vuodeksi. Hän johtaa iLEAPSin tieteellistä johtokuntaa 2010-2012. iLEAPS on yksi IGBPn (Integrated Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) ydinprojekteista. iLEAPS selvittää, miten vuorovaikutteiset fysikaaliset, kemialliset ja biologiset prosessit kuljettavat ja muuntavat energiaa ja ainetta maan ja ilmakehän välisen rajapinnan läpi.
