About the project

The Intercultural Bilingual Education in Latin America (IBE) project was initiated on personal consultant basis in 1998 in support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland in planning of education sector development cooperation in Central America. The gradual growth and extension of these activities lead to partnership contract between ministry and the Department of Education, which has been in vigour since 2004. Since then, the Department of Education (from 1.1.2010 Institute of Behavioural Sciences) has in this project offered support services for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Finland’s participation in and the follow-up of the education sector development in Central America and in the Andean region. The Institute of Behavioural Sciences assists the MFA e.g. in planning, monitoring and evaluation of the educational sector programmes in the region, conducts academic research related to intercultural and bilingual education in Latin America and offers its students two academic courses closely related to this field, “Comparative Education” and “Schooling and Development”.
