Castrén Society and Ministry of education Finland (Department of international affairs) 1988–1989 Studies at Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest) 1983–1990 Studies at the University of Helsinki (Finnic languages and Finno-Ugric linguistics) Current interests At the beginning of the 3rd millennium and 21st century several viewpoints are relevant for the study of the Finnic and other Finno-Ugric languages. Accordingly, I am currently interested in various research areas of linguistics and the Finnic languages. The following are the main topics with which I am concerned more or less constantly: • ethnic erosion, language change and linguistic networks of the Veps • language and cultural contacts between Estonian (Estonia) and Finnish (Finland) • morphosyntactic and typological change in the Finnic languages • historical and prehistoric relationship between the Finnic and other Finno-Ugric languages (most notably with respect to Erzya and Mari) In addition to this, questions rising from language ecology, revitalisation of endangered languages and language sociological issues are very actual and need to be taken into attention in the research of many languages of North Europe and Russia.
