From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment various attempts were made to define the criteria and limits of rationality. Some of these judgements are still considered rational, but others have long been consigned to the realm of the irrational. The criteria for rational thought and behaviour have previously perhaps been different from those of our own time. All judgements may now appear anachronistic if not contextualized.
