ROOTS AND RENEWALS

September 11-14, 2000

The North American Studies Program at the University of Helsinki Renvall Institute is proud to organize the Inaugural of the 25th Bicentennial Professor of American Studies and the Eighth Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference. The Biennial Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference on North American Studies has been organized on even-numbered years since 1986. It is one of the largest conferences in Europe for American and Canadian Studies.

This year the Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference is built around the theme of Roots and Renewals. The title symbolizes our celebration of 25 years of Bicentennial visiting professorship of American Studies at University of Helsinki. To emphasize these roots, we have invited all our former Bicentennials to join us in the conference in the spirit of renewal for the new millennium. We asked each of them to give a topic proposal, and the call for proposals (ended 28th of April) was on these themes.

The tentative workshops are titled:

  • African-American Leaders Confronting Africa and Christianity
  • Cold War Boderlands: the Clash of Civilizations
  • Colonialism in Comparative Perspective
  • Cowboys and Colonials: Inventing a Mythic America
  • Defining America: The Politics of National Identity
  • Don DeLillo and Millennial Mediations
  • Early American Botany
  • Emily Dickinson and Contemporary Writers
  • Gender, Race, and Rights in 20th Century America
  • Mapping the Americas
  • The New Cold War History
  • Patterns of Political and Social Change in Postwar America
  • Progressivism and Its Legacy
  • Teaching Nature

The Conference will take place at University of Helsinki in the center of the Finnish capital, City of Helsinki. Conference fee is 200 FIM, students 100 FIM payable to the Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference account: Leonia  800019-70024692 by August 30, 2000.
