Updated 5.8.2005

The Ph.D. program in North American Studies aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive understanding of American and Canadian culture(s) and of multidisciplinary research. Much of the education is achieved in close cooperation with the Finnish National Graduate School for North and Latin American Studies.

Any student entering the program must have at least a Master's degree in American and/or Canadian Studies, or in a closely related field, and sufficient knowledge of American and Canadian culture(s). Studies include participation in the Graduate School and other seminars, preparing presentations for international conferences, and course work either in the United States or Canada. Before submitting his/her Licentiate's thesis or Ph.D. dissertation, the student must pass two oral examinations on relevant North American Studies literature.

For additional information on doctoral studies in the North American Studies Program, please consult Professor Markku Henriksson, tel. 191 23291.
