Studies - Faculty examinations and course information

Kuva

Lecture series often include a written examination or examinations. Such examinations may be based on the student’s lecture notes and handouts given during the lectures. Often students must also read other books for the examination. Students are informed of examinations associated with a lecture series in conjunction with the lectures.

Some courses can be completed by passing an examination. Faculty examinations are intended for students wishing to complete such courses as book examinations.

Courses completed on Faculty examination dates

Courses can usually be completed in a Faculty examination if the course description indicates that the course can be completed by passing an examination. Course descriptions can be found in the course catalogues on WebOodi.

Please note, however, that courses in Comparative Religion cannot be completed by passing a Faculty examination. This discipline holds their examinations in co-operation with the Faculty of Theology. Students whose major subject is the Study of Religions must, however, complete their maturity test on a Faculty examination date.

Should degree requirements change, students can take examinations according to the previous academic year’s degree requirements until at least January the following year. If major changes are made, the transition period will last until the beginning of the next academic year. If necessary, disciplines can arrange even longer transition periods. Further information can be obtained from the relevant discipline.

Faculty examination procedures

Examinations begin at 9.00 sharp. Late students will be allowed to enter the examination room until 9.30. Students can leave the room no earlier than 9.30.

Students can take only writing utensils with them to their seats (no mobile phones, bags, etc.).

You will receive the examination questions in the examination envelope, a plastic folder or similar. You cannot read the examination questions until the invigilator gives permission.

You must prove your identity by showing the invigilator your ID card, driving license, passport or student card when you return your answer sheets. In addition to your answer sheets, you must return all material provided to you (the examination envelope, the plastic folder, the examination cover sheet, etc.). If you received the examination questions in the examination envelope, please return the questions and your answers in the same envelope.

Examination assessment

Examiners must enclose with the examination questions detailed information about when and how the students will be notified of the examination results.

An examination is considered failed if a student fails to submit his or her responses to the examination questions or fails to appear at the examination without an acceptable reason. A student who fails an examination once can sign up for the next examination. A student who fails twice or more can sign up no earlier than six weeks from the latest examination if the examiner so decides.

A student dissatisfied with the grading can appeal. The first appeal should be submitted to the examiner. Any appeals must be submitted within 14 days of the date when the student had the opportunity to obtain the grade and information about the application of grading criteria in his or her case. Further information is included in the regulations concerning examinations, the grading of completed studies and the Board of Examination Appeals at the University of Helsinki.

As mentioned in the regulations, in the secondary stage of the appeal process, the Board of Examination Appeals investigates appeals and complaints concerning undergraduate studies, and presents motions and issues statements on matters relating to the protection of students’ legal rights. The Board of the University of Helsinki appoints the chair of the Board of Examination Appeals as well as the members and their deputies for three-year terms.
