The Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki sets great store on its high research quality. It has consistently been ranked high on international field-specific scales that have largely depended on research performance (e.g. QS).

The Faculty of Arts is part of University of Helsinki – the oldest, largest, and most successful Finnish university by a wide margin. It identifies itself strongly as a research university, and takes pride in its high and multi-faceted research profile. It is one of the leading European research universities, and the only Finnish university among the 20 in the League of European Research Universities (LERU). It is among the 100 best-ranked universities in the world.

Like the University as a whole, the Faculty of Arts is the largest and most successful of its kind in Finland. It has the most comprehensive range of disciplines and the largest number of international contacts in the country, offering approximately 80 taught subjects of which 60 are taught as majors.

The Faculty of Arts maintains and develops its strong international research profile. At the same time, it plays an important national role on two fronts: first, our two national languages, Finnish and Swedish and many minority languages together with small languages in the Finno-Ugric language family need special attention from the Faculty’s researchers, along with the study of national heritage. Secondly, we at Helsinki have a number of subjects that are not studied or investigated at any other university in Finland, and some are rare even in Europe. We take great pride in the special research niches we are the custodians of.

Faculty of Arts strives to develop its research continuously. Valuable input is received from its Scientific Advisory Board, a group of eight academic specialists from universities around the world.
