Institute for Asian and African Studies (IAAS) is the only academic institution in Finland which is specialized entirely on Asian and African languages and cultures. The Institute's 10 disciplines offer courses ranging from modern Asian languages to ancient Near Eastern cultures.

Institute invests on highest quality in both teaching and research. This is ensured by wise recruitment policy and keeping up with latest novelties in pedagogy.

Teaching and research

Our curriculum provides a genuinely international and challenging environment for studying. Most disciplines offer instruction by native speakers. We have visiting researchers and lecturers regularly from foreign top universities. Most of our disciplines are dynamic members of international research networks.

The Institute's research is of excellent quality and received the highest marks in the latest Research Assessment Excercise in 2005. IAAS has an active role in the society by popularising knowledge concerning the languages and cultures of Asia and Africa.

Students

Each year in average 29 major students start their studies at the Institute for Asian and African Studies. Our subjects are very popular among minor students, too. About 16 Candidates of Philosophy, 19 Masters of Philosophy and 3 Doctors of Philosophy graduate yearly form the Institute. Our students pursue careers as teachers, translators, researchers and international administrators, just to mention few possibilities. Private sector is most popular employer, but career at university interest our students also. Some may find free-lancing or entrepreneurship rewarding.
