During this online course we will take a close look at feminist analysis of media texts (e.g. that of advertisements, music videos, movies, TV programs and online texts). We will search for concepts and methods suitable for the analysis of various texts by reading and discussing selected articles together. The topics for online term papers can range from the analysis of the representations of women, men and gender in advertisements to the analysis of the verbal and visual discourses that construct, maintain and / or subvert the gendered representations and practises of our media culture. For example, how do various media texts and their reception construct gendered identities and gendered understandings through both their systems of signification and situated practices?

This course also offers an opportunity to take an optional language module,Text workshop (2 credits), taught by Riitta Kelly. In this part of the course we will look at the original course texts with the help of additional tools that support studying texts, such as reading strategies, vocabulary strategies, web literacy issues and electronic dictionaries. It is possible to take the language module as such (ie. you do not need to take the whole course).

Prerequisites: Introduction to Women's studies

Mode of study: Individual study, online pair work and group tasks in Optima environment, guided analysis tasks and written assignments (please note that you need to have access to computers / the Internet at least twice a week).

Assessment: Written assignments, online discussions on required readings, and online term paper. Regular attendance and participation will be a prerequisite for passing this course.

Where no man has gone before. Women and Popular music in the Internet era (2 ov), Tuija Modinos, Performatiivisuus omaelämäkerroissa, Marja Kaskisaari.

VTT Marja Kaskisaaren kurssi Performatiivisuus omaelämäkerroissa. Kurssi on aineopintotasoinen ja on suunnattu ensisijaisesti naistutkimuksen opiskelijoille. Kurssin laajuus on 3 ov. Kurssin tavoite on kyetä puhumaan identiteetistä ja subjektin rakentumisesta poststrukturaalisessa feministisen teorian maastossa. Kurssilla keskitytään performatiivisuuden ("todeksi tekemisen ja aikaan saamisen") teoriaan, erityisesti Judith Butlerin analyysiin sukupuolen tuottamisesta. Kurssin näkökulma on sekä teoreettinen että käytännöllinen. Käytännöllisyys tulee siitä, että keskustelemme kokemuksen ja erityisesti omaelämäkerrallisen kokemuksen merkityksestä feministisessä ajattelussa - ja käytämme Butlerin ajatuksia omaelämäkerrallisten tekstien tulkinnassa. Omaelämäkerrallisuus tarkoittaa tässä yhteydessä lähinnä tekstipohjaista tulkintaa elävästä kokemuksesta. Luemme siis Butlerin lisäksi tekstejä, joissa pyritään käyttämään tai soveltamaan Butlerin ajatuksia arkisten kokemusten ja käytäntöjen muotoutumisen tulkinnassa. Yhdistämme omaelämäkertatutkimuksen ajatuksia ja performatiivisuutta ja keskustelemme muiden muassa siitä, miten elämäkerroissa neuvotellaan subjektiuden ehdoista, mitä taas feministiset teoriat oikeastaan "saavat aikaan" kokemuksen luennassa, millaista sukupuolta tuotetaan jne.
