Ecosystems and biodiversity

Environmental Research Unit (ECRU), headed by Atte Korhola, central research theme is the development and application of empirical, computational and modeling tools to detect global environmental changes and to analyse their ecological and societal impacts. ECRU is particularly interested in longer-term climatic changes and works mostly on arctic environments. Read more about ECRU. (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

The Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI) carries out research on forests and related natural resources in tropical and developing countries. (Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry)

Urban ecology research group, leaded by Jari Niemelä, concentrates several themes of urban ecology and also nature biodiversity and conservation issues. Research is strongly multidisciplinary linking natural sciences and social sciences. Read more about urban ecology group (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

Heavy Metals in Environment-research group at Department of Environmental Sciences has put special emphasis on mercury and cadmium: their spread and action on environment. Read more about heavy metal research. (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

Environment ecology research group is divided several research fields: water and soil ecology, ekotoxicology, environment chemistry and environment microbiology. One of the main research areas is also urban ecosystems. (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

Fisheries and Environmental Management Group (FEM), leaded by Sakari Kuikka, focuses on the interaction between ecosystems and human society. Research interests cover decision analysis of renewable resources and biodiversity and identification and quantification of risks in the use of natural resources for instance. read more about the FEM. (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

Aquatic Sciences research concentrates on limnology and marine ecology. Special research fields cover nitrogen processes in aquatic ecosystems and Baltic Sea research in general. (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

Division of Atmospheric Sciences, leaded by Markku Kulmala is known for its research concerning effects of atmospheric aerosols on the climate and human health, the microphysics of clouds and the connections between the biosphere, aerosols, clouds and the climate. Read more about the FCoE. (Faculty of Science)

Department of Geosciences and Geography and its research field: "processes of evolution and biodiversity" concerns especially mammal faunas and vegetation of the past, separately as well as in interaction with each other and with the changing climate. Read more form department´s research site (Faculty of Science)

Environmental research at Department of Forest Sciences concentrates on the interactions between climate change and forest and peatland ecosystems and also the economic-ecological models of forest conservation. Read more from department´s research site. (Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry)

The Metapopulation Research Group (MRG), headed by Ilkka Hanski, conducts research on the biology of species inhabiting fragmented landscapes. Research combines ecological, molecular, computational, and theoretical approaches in the same projects. Read more about MRG.

Department of Food and Environmental Sciences and it´s research field: "vital soil and clean environment" concentrates on processes of soil and ecosystems, environmental loading and also remediating polluted sites. Read more from department´s research site. (Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry)
