Environmental Research Unit (ECRU), headed by Atte Korhola, central research theme is the development and application of empirical, computational and modeling tools to detect global environmental changes and to analyse their ecological and societal impacts. Urban ecology research group, leaded by Jari Niemelä, concentrates several themes of urban ecology and also nature biodiversity and conservation issues. Fisheries and Environmental Management Group (FEM), leaded by Sakari Kuikka, focuses on the interaction between ecosystems and human society. Division of Atmospheric Sciences, leaded by Markku Kulmala is known for its research concerning effects of atmospheric aerosols on the climate and human health, the microphysics of clouds and the connections between the biosphere, aerosols, clouds and the climate. Department of Geosciences and Geography and its research field: "processes of evolution and biodiversity" concerns especially mammal faunas and vegetation of the past, separately as well as in interaction with each other and with the changing climate. The Metapopulation Research Group (MRG), headed by Ilkka Hanski, conducts research on the biology of species inhabiting fragmented landscapes. Research combines ecological, molecular, computational, and theoretical approaches in the same projects. Read more about MRG.
