HENVI organises each spring a multidisciplinary Science Day concentrating on a topical environmental theme. This year the theme is Interdisciplinary Environmental Research and Teaching: Why does society need environmental research?

The Science Days take place on Thursday - Friday 7th -8th April in the Main building of the University of Helsinki, Fabianinkatu 33, Helsink. The Science Days are free of charge and open to all who are interested in the subject.

Science Days 2011Program of the Science Days

The HENVI Science Days on Interdisciplinary Research and Teaching will gather together researchers, students, authorities, politicians and representatives of the business sector to discuss the role of environmental research in the society. The event aims to enhance the use of scientific knowledge in decision-making and the dialog between the science and the society. The first day of the Science Days is devoted to the application of environmental research in the society. The topic will be approached through three themes: Baltic Sea, climate change and sustainability issues. As environmental problems are multi-faceted, the solutions can often be found in the cross-cutting areas of the different disciplines. Two working groups of the second day will concentrate on problems and best practices of interdisciplinarity in environmental research and teaching.

Keynote speakers include e.g. Professor Donald J. Wuebbles who is a lead author on the first and second international assessments of climate change by IPCC, Professor Marina Fischer-Kowalski who is one of the leading researchers in the field of socio-ecology, Professor Robert Frodeman who is an expert on interdisciplinarity in environmental research as well as Professor Cecilia Lundholm who is the author of the newly published book with the title: Environmental Learning -Insights from research into the student experience.
