ChangE 2013 will be held in the University of Helsinki's Main Building or Päärakennus (Fabianinkatu 33). Situated in the heart of Helsinki's city centre, the conference venue is adjacent to several major landmarks, including the Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral; the Market Square; and the shopping streets of Aleksanterinkatu and Esplanade. The building has two opposite entrances: the "old side", which faces Senate Square, and the "new side", which is where conference attendees should enter (see the purple marker on the map below).

How to get there

The university Main Building is a short walk from numerous hotels (see accommodation info for suggestions). If you're arriving by public transport, the closest tram stop is Senaatintori (Senate Square), which is served by tram lines 3T, 4, 4T and 7B. The closest metro stop is Kaisaniemi. These locations are marked with blue arrows on the map below (click to enlarge). For more information on Helsinki's public transit, see the transportation pages.

Once you're inside

When you enter through the "new side" of the Main Building, the conference registration will be on the right-hand side of the lobby. From there, two sets of stairs and lifts will take you to the third floor. This will be the site of all the conference sections. Plenaries will be held upstairs on the fourth floor in the Pieni Juhlasali (Small Hall).

Toilets can be found on the first floor (ground floor) near the registration desk, as well as on the third and fourth floors near the conference rooms. See the venue floor maps for more detailed locations.

Rector's reception

The first conference day will close with a reception hosted by Ulla-Maija Forsberg, acting rector of the University of Helsinki. This will be held in the Main Building's "lehtisali", which is on the old side of the building on the second floor. The second floor connects the Main Building's old and new sides, so just follow the hallway from the lifts in either direction. You can also enter the building from the old side (Senate Square), which takes you directly to the second floor.

Lunch breaks

There are several lunch options near the Main Building. An UniCafe is on the opposite corner (see "Ravintola Porthania" on the map above), and there are several cafes and fast food options inside Kaisaniemi metro station. There is also a K-Market inside selling take-away foods. You can find places to eat inside the Kluuvi shopping centre, and your conference pack will include a list of suggested eateries.

For a quick lunch inside the Main Building, a university cafe (UniCafe) is located on the ground floor. The day's menu is displayed inside the lobby and outside the cafe entrance. When you enter the cafe, take a tray, silverware, and a glass before you join the queue. A server will dish up your entree of choice. After paying for the meal, you can add a salad, bread, and side dishes.

The basic prices for guests are as follows, depending on the class of meal which is chosen:

  • light lunch (kevyesti) – 5,35 €
  • affordable lunch (edullisesti) – 6,00 €
  • savoury lunch (maukkaasti) – 7,10 €

Payments can be made by cash, debit, or credit cards. For the latest week's menu, see the UniCafe website.
