Career Prospects

Graduates of the Media and Global Communication master’s programme at the University of Helsinki have gone on to work in a range of jobs across the media sector, from communication managers and industry analysts (at Nokia, UPM, Google, IBM), to start-up companies (Kiosked, NetProfile, ArcticStartup, Dreamdo). Other graduates have become consultants (Hill and Knowlton, Miltton), journalists (YLE, Talous Sanomat, Helsinki Times) or now work in public sector and non-governmental organisations. Some graduates also continue on to PhD research.

Patricia Alvarez GarciaPatricia Alvarez Garcia

Patricia came to Finland in 2004, after graduating from ITESO in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she studied Communication Sciences. During her undergraduate years, she spent a year in Utrecht University, where she studied Communications and Feminism. Her interest in communications is what brought her to Helsinki University. Sa HaoxuanSa Haoxuan

Sa received a joint Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and economics, as well as a professional certificate in engineering from Xiamen University. She started her Master’s degree in Media and Global Communication in 2010, and is still working on her thesis, which deals with online nationalism in Chinese microblogs. Read More

Gulsana KoomanovaGulsana Koomanova

Gulsana Koomanova comes from Kyrgyzstan, a country in Central Asia. However, the mountainous country was not enough for her and she decided to reach new highs. Gulsana lived in Texas, USA during the years 2002-2003 as an exchange student in high school. She also lived in South Carolina, USA in 2007 in a Work and Travel program and finally came to Finland to study her Master’s Degree in 2008. Read More

Katja LiukkonenKatja Liukkonen

Katja completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Brighton in the UK, in Communication and Media Studies. She is a first generation student of the MGC Master’s programme, and her thesis was entitled “From Homo Sapiens to Photo Sapiens: The Role of Amateur Photography in the Free Newspaper Metro”. She began her studies in 2009 and finished in 2012, working on a full-time basis since her third year as a Master’s student. Read More.

Ekaterina PalmenEkaterina Palmén

Before moving to Helsinki, Ekaterina received her Bachelor’s degree in international journalism in her native St. Petersburg from St. Petersburg State University. She completed her Master’s degree in Communication in 2008, and wrote her thesis on the New York Times’ coverage of the war in Iraq. Her professional interests are related to marketing and communications, so this is the path she has pursued in Helsinki even before she completed her Master’s. Read More.

Johanna Wahlroos Johanna Wahlroos

Johanna Wahlroos studied her Bachelor’s degree in Germany and then worked a year and a half in the area of marketing and communications in Chile. Since January 2010 she has been working part-time at the Communication Research Centre (CRC) as a research assistant. “I have been able to work with very different tasks, including quantitative data analysis, preparing reports and organizing seminars.” Read More
