Instruction in Urban Geography

Urban Geography courses contain a wide variety of learning methods and themes, consisting of both practical work and theoretical discussions in small groups. Many courses are integrated into ongoing research projects. This offers students a possibility to take part in actual scientific research and get involved in the research community. Research courses are also particularly useful for finding an interesting theme for the Master’s Thesis.

Urban phenomena, urban segregation and comparing cities at a national and international level are at the core of studying Urban Geography at the University of Helsinki. Urban Geography education is typically interdisciplinary, and several courses are organized together with different University departments, like Department of Sociology or Architecture. A wide variety of courses are also tied to institutions outside the University, such as construction companies or housing associations.
