Research project

The working title for my Ph.D thesis is “Territorial conflicts on the Northern Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua: Struggles over resources and representations”. During the first three years of my research I was working as a project researcher in the multi-disciplinary research project “Conflicts over resources and representations: Environmental and human rights struggles in Nicaragua”, led by Ph.D. Elina Vuola at the Institute of Development Studies. Since July 2003 I am working as an assistant at the Department of Geography, where I also worked during 1998 and 1999.

My research analyses the territorial conceptions, practices and strategies and the agency of the various actors (indigenous people, governmental agencies, and national and international environmental movements), and how these strategically use different territorial discourses and representations to control, defend and contest conflicting notions of territory. The case studies of the Atlantic coast as a region and the Bosawás biosphere reserve show how territories are differently constructed, defended and contested by the different social actors and their competing territorial conceptions.

The key issues analysed in the research are:

  • Conflicts over the access, control and management of the territory and its natural and human resources
  • The differing territorial strategies, conceptions and practices of the different actors
  • The use of territorial discourses and representations (social, environmental, historical and cartographic), and the distinction between these as essential ideals and as contemporary strategies for territorial control
  • How the discourses and representations are both constituted by and constitutive of the political processes directing environmental and territorial policies
  • The links of indigenous territorial and environmental struggles to global policies and movements
