Research project, studies and work


My Ph.D. work deals with paleogeographical and paleotopographical modelling issues. In my thesis I will develop and evaluate GIS methods and data used in paleogeographical studies. In this process also a great number of paleogeographical maps and models will be created. My study sites cover five study areas in Northernmost Finnish Lapland, Capital region of Finland on the southern coast, Olkiluoto region on the westen coast, Lake Pielisjärvi district in the easternmost Finland and and the Karelian Isthmush (Former part of Finland, part of Russia nowadays). Official advisors of my Ph.D study are professors Petri Pellikka and Miska Luoto. In addition I collaborate in my case studies with professors Matti Tikkanen, Heikki Seppä , M.Sc. Maija Heikkilä and Ph.D. Arto Miettinen.

The work is funded by the Geography graduate school. Besides paleogeographical modelling, I am interested in geomorphological fieldwork, long-term process measurements and possibilities of using digital terrain models in physical geography. I am also familiar with sedimentology, pollen analysis and dating methods to some extent. Climatic change and its effects especially to the coasts of Finland is also one field of my interests.

In my M.Sc. thesis I studied the evolution of landscape in capital region of Finland due to relative sea level (RSL) changes. In the thesis I introduced and tested a new method to produce paleogeographical maps using triangulated irregular networks (TINs). The thesis was awarded with dissertation award of ProGIS -organisation (Finnish member of EuroGI -organisation. You can see an example map from 2000 before present or you can view an animation of the raw results.

I am also a civil engineering technician, since I previously studied civil engineering and graduated from the Helsinki Institute of Technology (part of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences nowadays) in 1998. In my dissertation I studied the possibilities of GIS in community planning. I have worked in a few planning agencies by my M.Sc.-studies (during 1998-2003) ([1] [2] [3]) and I have worked as a part-time teacher at my department since may 2001, too. Since 2003 I have been full time employed by the department of geography, first as an assistant professor (2003-2005) and as a doctoral student from the beginning of February, 2006. I have acted as an associate member of the Finnish Matriculation Examination Board since the spring of 2006 and I am a board member of The Geographical Society of Finland and a vice-member of the management group of the department.

During recent years I have conducted several peer review tasks for following journals and foundations (in chronological order): Terra [four times], International Journal of Geographical Information Science [twice], Global Change Biology, National Science Foundation, Fennia.
