In my research, From a Tool to a Topic of Research: The Role of Landscape Imagery in Finnish Geography, I scrutinize the ways landscape images have been used in Finnish geography by examining the collection of landscape pictures collected by the Geographical society of Finland in the late 1800’s. I also pay attention to the landscape photographs published in Finnish geographical journals and other publications. I evaluate the impact of paradigms on the role, style, and purpose of visualization and on the appreciation of ‘scientific’ and ‘popular’ images. The study contributes to the understanding of visual-cultural changes in academic and popular landscape imageries by connecting them to paradigmatic, technological, and societal changes at multiple scales. The project is an ambitious step forward from my Master’s thesis (Linkola 2005, see list of publications), which focused on Johannes Gabriel Granö’s influence on, and legacy in, geographical landscape studies.
