Finnish Language

Finno-Ugrian Studies

Finnish language studies focus on Finnish from various perspectives: the characteristics and differences between spoken and written Finnish, Finnish as a mother tongue and as a second language, the Finnish language among its related languages and other languages of the world. The studies also cover the diverse regional, social and situational variation in Finnish as well as Finnish as a language community and linguistic interaction. During their studies, students can apply for a work placement and a study exchange abroad through the Erasmus programme, for instance.

Finnish language students are trained to become language professionals who are able to expertly use Finnish and who have an extensive scientific outlook on language, its importance to humans and its position in culture and society. Graduates in the Finnish language are employed in positions such as Finnish language and literature teachers, teachers of Finnish as a second language, journalists, public relations officers, researchers and language consultants.
