Basic and Intermediate Studies in the Finnish Linguistics for Translators

Students studying to become translators have their own basic studies in the Finnish language. These studies are compulsory for all students in the Faculty of Arts who have translation as their major subject.  The studies introduce students to the Finnish language from the perspective of translation. The aim is that students learn to analyse the structure of Finnish and its relationship to the creation of meaning.  In addition, basic studies also include text revision and courses examining language use in different contexts.

Translation students can, if they wish, take intermediate Finnish language studies. Intermediate studies introduce students to basic concepts in text linguistics, conversation analysis, lexical and onomastic research, as well as practice in observing linguistic phenomena and their scientific analysis . In addition, students can take courses in one or more electives.  Students also acquire the knowledge and skills needed by Finnish language professionals in working life.
