Field-specific combined funds   

The Theology Fund will award scholarships of 900 euro each to theology students (in total max. 6300 euro), and scholarships of 800–1600 euro each to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers for the study of the Orthodox cultural heritage (in total max. 1600 euro). Furthermore, 15 500 euro will be awarded as one or two grants to female postgraduate students of church history.

The Law Fund will award five scholarships of 1000 euro to undergraduate and graduate law students (in total max. 5000 euro). The fund will also award grants of max. 3000 euro to postgraduate students and researchers of law and travel grants of max 1000 euro (in total max. 22 000 euro). A part of the grants that are awarded to postgraduate students and researchers are reserved especially for the fields of procedural and criminal law.

The Medicine Fund will award grants to postgraduate students and researchers in the Faculty of Medicine within the following focus areas of research:

- oncology (in total 14 000 euro)
- pulmonary diseases (in total 5400 euro)
- medical genetics (in total 6200 euro)
- child psychiatry (in total 6700 euro)
- surgery (in total 1000 euro)
- gynecology (in total 1100 euro)
- neuropathology (in total 1700 euro)
- odontology (in total 1000 euro)
- research in cerebral infarction (in total 1200 euro)

In addition, a total of 9800 euro in grants will be awarded to research in medicine, whose focus area has not been more specifically defined and 3600 euro in travel grants.

The Arts and Social Sciences Fund will award 45 scholarships of 1000 euro each to graduate students in the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Behavioral Sciences.
Furthermore:
- 2800 euro will be awarded as one or several travel grants to postdoctoral researchers engaged in teaching. The applicant must in his/her application specify the teaching he/she has given during the last 2 years.
- 3700 euro will be awarded as one or several grants for French language studies at a university in France. The applicant must in his/her application specify the place of study, the time period and motivations for the studies in France.
- Rector Ilkka Niiniluoto’s Fund will award a 1000 euro scholarship to a student of theoretical philosophy.

The Mathematics and Science Fund will award 20-25 scholarships of 1000 euro each to undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics or science with outstanding achievements in studies. Some of the scholarships are specifically intended for students at the beginning of their studies and some especially for graduate students. One of the evaluation criteria is finishing an average of 55 study credits per year. Furthermore from the Fund of May 29th, 1913, 1000 euro is declared to be open for applications.

The Agriculture and Forestry Fund will award five scholarships of 1000 euro (altogether 5000 euro) each to undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture and food sciences, and grants of 1500–2500 euro each to postgraduate students and researchers of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (in total max. 10 500 euro). In addition, max. 2800 euro will we awarded as travel grants to undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduate students and researchers of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. A single travel grant is max. 800 euro.

The Fund of Etelä-Pohjanmaan Maanviljelysseura will award two scholarships of 1000 euro each to undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, home economics, veterinary science and food sciences, who are from the area Etelä-Pohjanmaa and who are working on their master’s thesis. Those applying must explain their connection to Etelä-Pohjanmaa in their application.

The Hyytiälä Forest Station Fund will award two scholarships of 1000 euro each for students writing their master's thesis at the forest station.

The Biological and Environmental Fund will award
• grants and travel grants to postgraduate students and researchers in genetics (altogether max. 4500 euro)
• from the Heinonsalo Fund 2100 euro as one or several scholarships to postgraduate students in biological and environmental sciences for cost of material
• one grant of 600 euro to a undergraduate/graduate student, preference is given to students in the field of osteology.

The Veterinary Medicine Fund will award scholarships of max. 1000 euro for graduate students who are working on their licentiate's thesis and who are planning to continue their studies as postgraduates and to continue scientific research in the field of veterinary medicine. Furthermore, the Fund will give awards of 500 euro for students who have during the year 2012 published an international scientific article based on their licentiate's thesis. An application has to be submitted also for the award based on the article.

The Pharmacy Fund will award research grants and travel grants to postgraduate students, researchers and  undergraduate/graduate students, in total a maximum of 3300 euro.  

The Jubilee Fund will award travel grants of 1000-3000 euro to undergraduate/graduate students and postgraduate students, in total a maximum of 49 000 euro. The travel grants awarded to undergraduate/graduate students are intended for studies abroad and are primarily intended for students not participating in the exchange programmes or agreements organised by the University and the Centre for International Mobility. The travel grants for postgraduate students are for postgraduate studies abroad (excluding conference trips). The travel grants are awarded for trips beginning on 1.1.2013 or later.

The Laura Kolbe and Thomas Forss Fund will award 1-2 scholarship of max. 1200 euro euro for the advancement of studies or research in international private law, urban studies or Europe-research.

The Fund of Helsingin yliopiston professorien puolisot ry will award scholarships to handicapped students. A central criterium for the scholarships is the applicant’s progress in his/her studies. The scholarships can also be awarded to students who have completed a degree during the year 2012.

Independent funds

The University of Helsinki Alumni Association Fund will award:
- Two scholarships of 1000 euro to gifted and active undergraduate/graduate students. The applicants are expected to demonstrate evidence of academic success, activity and enterprise. Involvement in organisations within the academic community will be considered an asset.
- A Väinö Linna scholarship of 1000 euro to an undergraduate/graduate student in economics, specifically macroeconomics.
- A scholarship of 1000 euro from the Juha Korppi-Tommola fund to a gifted undergraduate or graduate student, who’s success in studies is above average and who has been an active member of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, one of the university’s nations or in a student organisation of the faculty or department.
- A scholarship of 1000 euro from the Taita Fund to an undergraduate or graduate student for studies or thesis work at the Taita Research Station.

All scholarships from the University of Helsinki Alumni Association Fund are to be used to advance the recipient’s studies.

The Friends of the Environment Fund will award max. 14 scholarships of 2000 euro each to undergraduate/graduate students, who have limited economical means and who are working on their master’s theses concerning environmental research. The faculty or field of applicants is not restricted (e.g. students of science, social sciences and law may receive a scholarship), but the topic of the thesis must relate to environmental research. The applicants must explain their limited economical means in their applications and mail a copy of their latest confirmed certificate of taxation latest on 6.3.2013 to Student Services/Grant applications, P.O.Box 3, 00014 University of Helsinki.
 
The Erkki Hannikainen Scholarship Fund will award grants to students of the French language at the University of Helsinki for postgraduate studies in France. Graduate students who will be graduating shortly and are planning to undertake postgraduate studies may also apply. When applying, their master’s thesis must be completed or near completion.
The grant may be awarded to a single applicant for a full year of study or to several applicants in smaller sums for shorter stays. The grant may be awarded to the same applicant several times, but no more than three times in a row. Each year, the recipient must submit a freely written report on his or her activities during the grant period and specify how the grant was spent.
The total amount of grants awarded in 2013 will not exceed
29 000 euro.

The Aili and Brynolf Honkasalo Fund will award 4 research grants of approximately 19 400 euro each to promising, successful postgraduate students and researchers, who after having completed their Master of Laws degree are pursuing postgraduate studies in order to write their doctoral dissertation, or after having completed the doctoral degree, aim at becoming teachers at the Faculty of Law. Planned studies abroad for a minimum of three months will be considered an asset. One of the grants are primarily intended for researchers of criminal law, criminology and procedural law.

Ensio Hyvärinen Fund will award scholarships based on activeness and studies completed abroad. The sum for these scholarships will be determined depending on the applications that are received. The following positions will award points for the activiness scholarships: responsible positions within LKS, Thorax, SML, the Student Union (HYY) and the year classes; in addition administrative positions within the university, faculty and the institutions. Discretion will be used in awarding points for responsible positions within other student organisations. Those applying on the basis of studies completed abroad must attach a list of studies completed abroad (course, faculty/university, time, study points) and a transcript of studies or other proof of studies to their application.

The Yrjö and Tuulikki Ilvonen Fund will in the year 2013 award grants of up to a total of 25 500 euro for medical research in panic disorder. The grants are primarily for postgraduate students and researchers at the University of Helsinki

The Kaarlo Koskimies and Irma Koskimies Scholarship Fund will award grants for research in Finnish history. Three types of grants from the Fund are available: 1. A working grant of approximately 20 000 euro per year for a postgraduate student, 2. A research grant of approximately 25 000 euro per year for a recent doctoral graduate (doctoral degree completed less than two years ago), 3. a travel grant (trips to archives, libraries and conferences) for postgraduate students and young doctoral graduates. All postgraduate students and young holders of the doctoral degree from all faculties and departments of the University of Helsinki, who are engaged in research on Finnish history, are eligible for the grants. When the applicants are equally qualified, priority will be given to applicants coming from the Southern Ostrobothnia region.

In addition, the fund will award a scholarship of 1000 euro to a hard-working and successful graduate student who is a member of the Etelä-Pohjalainen Osakunta (Southern Ostrobothnia Student Society) and is currently writing his/her master’s thesis. The Osakunta and the University will check the membership, there is no need to attach a separate certificate of the membership to the application.
The total amount of grants and scholarships awarded in 2013 will not exceed 85 000 euro.

The Suoma Loimaranta-Airila Fund will award a grant of approximately 18 000 euro for research aiming at a doctoral dissertation, and several scholarships of 1000 euro each to undergraduate/graduate students. The grant and the scholarships are directed to gifted students at the University of Helsinki, who are members of the student nation Satakuntalainen Osakunta. The Osakunta and the University will check the membership, there is no need to attach a separate certificate of the membership to the application. Descendants of Wilhelm Lindstedt and Hilma Nyholm will be given priority even if they are not members of Satakuntalainen Osakunta. Proof of kinship must be attached to the application.

The Cooperative Teaching and Research Fund will award scholarships of 1700 euro each (altogether 5100 euro) to students whose theses or dissertations are related to research in cooperatives. All students at the University of Helsinki and at other universities may apply.

The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund
(SYLFF) will award three scholarships of 21 000 euro each. The scholarships are awarded to the following fields of study: 1) International Relations; 2) Asian and African Studies; 3) Social and Cultural Anthropology. The scholarships are for postgraduate students at the University of Helsinki and they are intended for fulltime research during one year. The scholarship recipient has to have a valid postgraduate right of study. SYLFF grantees have the opportunity to apply for further financing through the SYLFF programme (www.sylff.org).

The Chancellor Antti Tulenheimo Memorial Fund
will award a maximum of two research grants of 19 400 euro each to distinguished legal scholars holding a basic degree in law whose research topic is in the field of criminal law.

The applications are evaluated according to the uniform evaluation criteria of the University of Helsinki Funds. Individual funds may in addition have their own points of emphasis, which are mentioned in the fund application texts.
