The research of the Department of Forest Sciences concentrates on the understanding of the production chain of material and immaterial services and commodities produced by the forests. The wide research reaches from biological basic processes to an economic analysis and also includes the measurement of phenomena, follow-up and the anticipating of the future development.

The Department of Forest Sciences invests to topical research and the research is of a high level and internationally scientifically appreciated. In the research projects are investigated among others effects of a climate change, the structural change of the forest industry and the general technological development on the forest area on the domestic front as well as abroad. One of the central resourse in research activities are SMEAR stations which are common with department's of Forest Sciences and Physics.

Research is done in the international co-operation with sector research institutes, other universities, companies and other departments of University of Helsinki.
