Plant Biology Research at the Department of Forest Sciences meets the highest international standards
According to the international evaluation panel set by the Academy of Finland, we have a
few plant biology research groups in Finland which are at top-level internationally. The
research group at the Department of Forest Sciences, led by prof. Eero Nikinmaa, was
ranked among the best.
Groups were evaluated based on the quality of research, funding, research infrastructures, outreach and researcher education. The panel considered the holistic perspective in seeking to solve complex research questions as a special strength of the group. The long-term, multidisciplinary research strategy and close collaboration with the Department of Physics has produced efficient and high-quality research programs and clear results regarding e.g. forest productivity and climate change issues.
The group
maintains first-class research infrastructures, especially the field measurement systems
at the SMEAR stations. The research training is of high quality and the outreach program
using e.g. modern web-based applications is exemplary to other units.
