Film and Television Studies

The department of Film and Television Studies offers all students of the University of Helsinki general knowledge about audiovisual culture as well as the opportunity of gaining a deeper historical and theoretical understanding of this field. Film and Television Studies is full minor subject offering 25 ECTS Basic Studies and 35 ECTS Intermediate Studies.

Since its inception the department has collaborated with the Open University in organizing many of the basic studies level courses. Every second academic year the introduction and history courses are given in English, every other second year in Finnish (2015-2016 in English, 2016-2017 in Finnish, etc.). A selection of other course are annually offered in English. It is also possible to take textbook examinations in English

Courses have also been arranged in collaboration with other departments of the institute for Art Research and with the Department of Communication as well as with language and history departments. The Finnish Film Archive and the Department for Film and Set Design at the University of Art and Design are also important partners.
