Undergraduate and graduate degrees

Regulations

Degree Regulations confirmed by the Faculty Council and other relevant provisions and regulations apply to the degrees and studies offered by the Faculty as well as to their completion.

Admissions

Students are admitted to complete both the Bachelor and Master of Science degrees or the Master of Science degree. Students who are admitted to complete only the Master of Science degree may be expected to complete a maximum of 60 credits of studies that supplement their prior education. These supplementary studies are not included in the minimum scope (120 credits) of the Master’s degree.

Study modules

The studies consist of study units that may be compulsory, optional or elective. The study units form modules which may be multidisciplinary and of varying scope. The modules are called basic studies, basic and intermediate studies, and advanced studies.

The scope of basic studies in the major subject is 25 credits. The scope of intermediate studies is 55–71 credits and in subject teacher education 45–71 credits. Intermediate studies in the major subject include a six-credit Bachelor’s thesis. Advanced studies total at least 70 credits and include a Master’s thesis (40 credits).

Minor subject students must complete 25 credits of basic studies, 35 credits of intermediate studies and 60 credits of advanced studies. The advanced studies include a 20-credit thesis.

Students are entitled to exceed the above-mentioned minimum credit requirements for the study modules.

The scope and contents of study units included in multidisciplinary study modules are determined by the department responsible for each study unit. The status of multidisciplinary study modules in the degree programme is defined in the degree requirements of the student’s major subject department.

Completion of the Bachelor of Science degree (180 credits)

In order to be awarded the Bachelor of Science degree, students must complete 180 credits of studies, as determined in the degree requirements. These studies must include at least basic and intermediate studies in the major subject and at least 50 credits of study modules in one or more minor subject. The minor subject studies must consist of either basic studies in two different subjects (25 cr + 25 cr) or basic and intermediate studies in one subject (25 cr + 35 cr). Multidisciplinary study modules are also accepted as minor subjects. In addition, the Bachelor’s degree must include at least 10 credits of language studies, at least 5 credits of ICT studies, 1-3 credits of practical training or studies that improve the students’ employment skills, and a personal study plan (1 credit). Students must also take a maturity test, and they may incorporate elective studies into the degree.

Completion of the Master of Science degree (120 credits)

In order to be awarded the Master of Science degree, students must complete 120 credits of studies, as determined in the degree requirements. These studies must include advanced studies in the major subject, a personal study plan (1 credit) and practical training or studies that improve the students’ employment skills. Students must also take a maturity test, and they may incorporate elective studies into the degree. Students must complete the studies in the other national language (Swedish or Finnish) and a foreign language as required by Section 6 of Decree No. 794/2004, unless they have completed these studies as part of their previous education.
