Printing and distribution of the dissertation

The title page of a dissertation
The title page of a dissertation must bear the name of the relevant department or discipline of the Faculty of Science. In addition, the title page of the copies which are submitted to the academic community should bear all the relevant information about the public defence of the doctoral dissertation.
The distribution of a dissertation
The University Senate has decided that each doctoral candidate at the University of Helsinki
must distribute copies of his or her dissertation at the University. The Faculty of Science
wishes that each doctoral candidate agrees to publish his or her dissertation online.
Thus he or she must distribute a total of 30 printed copies and 1 electronic copy of his or
her dissertation at the University as set out below:
- the National Library of Finland: 1 electronic copy and 6 complete printed copies
- Cancellor (only the summarising report in case of article dissertations)
- Rector (only the summarising report )
- Main Building noticeboard (only the summarising report )
- Faculty Office: three copies (only the summarising reports )
- Kumpula Science Library: two complete copies
- Faculty Council members, as specified in a list available from the Faculty Office (complete copies)
In the case of article dissertations, all the printed copies may be complete. The persons or offices to whom you can deliver only the summarising report are indicated separately in the list.
The electronic copy of the dissertation must be submitted to the National Library of Finland (e-thesis(at)helsinki.fi) at least three days before the dissertation is made available to the public, that is normally 13 days before the public examination. The printed copies of the dissertation submitted to the National Library of Finland must be delivered to the library porter (Unioninkatu 36) before the public examination.
The doctoral candidate should deliver the other printed copies at least ten days before the public examination. Three copies of the dissertation (cancellor, rector and main building noticeboard) is delivered to the head porter of the main building (Fabianinkatu 33). The Faculty Office will give the address labels for the distribution of dissertations.
It is customary for doctoral candidates to deliver a copy of their dissertation personally to the professors at their department. Custom also dictates that doctoral candidates write a dedication to dissertation copies given to members of the Faculty Council and to professors. The Faculty recommends that this dedication be written on a card and enclosed with the dissertation. A dedication (on a card) is usually also enclosed with dissertation copies submitted to the Chancellor and the Rector. The Faculty requests that any extraneous dissertation copies be returned to the doctoral candidate (by internal mail to his or her department).
IThe above applies to the distribution of copies at the University if the doctoral candidate has agreed on the electronic publication of his or her dissertation. Please contact the Office of the Faculty if you do not publish your dissertation in electronic form.
When deciding on the print run, however, please note that the doctoral candidate him- or herself is entitled and obliged to inform the public of his or her research. For further instructions, see the En route to the doctorate website.
