On this site there are important dates for all applicants for student exchange programmes.

Student Application Deadlines

• May 15, 2009 for Academic year 2009-2010 or for Autumn Semester 2009
• November 1, 2009 for Spring Semester 2010
• Late applications will not be considered!

Semester Dates

• Autumn Semester: September 1, 2009 - December 31, 2009
• Spring Semester: January 1, 2010 - May 31, 2010
• Academic year: August 1, 2009– July 31, 2010.
• Please check and observe the Orientation Course dates and the teaching periods of the University of Helsinki (see below).

Arrival Dates and Pick-up Service

• August 30 - September 1, 2009
• Some dormitories are available only from September 1. More information on Acceptance, Arrival & Pick-up Service page.
• January 6-7, 2010
• The Pick-up Service can be arranged only on the official Arrival dates.

Pick-up Service Deadlines

• August 14, 2009
• December 11, 2009
• Pick-up Service can be arranged only on the official Arrival dates.

Exchange Period and Housing Period

1) Students planning to take courses for 1 semester or 2 semesters

• Students must arrive in Helsinki according the semesters of the University of Helsinki, e.g. before the Orientation Course and courses start
• Exception: Some Erasmus agreements have been made only for 3 months, in these cases shorter exchange period is possible

2) Students planning to do research, laboratory work, clinical training or equivalent and no courses during the exchange period

• Period can be different than the semesters
• The applicant must give the reasons for this exceptional exchange period on the application form, and the period must always be agreed with the faculty and department of the University of Helsinki.

Housing period: Housing period is usually the same than the exchange period. Housing is for fixed-period, and it can’t be changed.

Teaching Periods in 2009-2010

The University of Helsinki arranges teaching in the most of its faculties in periodical system. Teaching Periods vary from Faculty to Faculty.

Please note that you have to arrive in Helsinki before the Orientation Course and courses start. It is usually not possible to arrive in the middle of a period and then have a place on the courses.

Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Arts, Behavioural Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and Theology

1. Period: September 7 - October 25
2. Period: November 2 - December 20
3. Period: January 18 - March 7
4. Period: March 15 - May 23

 

Faculty of Biosciences

1. Period: September 7 - October 25
2. Period: November 2 - December 20
3. Period: January 11 – March 7
4. Period: March 15 – May 28

Examinations

Please note that there are no special examination periods at the University of Helsinki.

Course Examinations are held at the end of the courses. It is usually possible to take examinations once a month (faculty examinations). You will get more information on the Orientation Course.
