Important Dates, Exchange Periods and Teaching Periods
On this site there are important dates for all applicants for student exchange programmes.
Exchange period and Housing period
Welcome Fair and Orientation Course
Bank Holidays (Public Holidays) in 2011-2012>>Permits & Living in Finland
- May 15, 2012 for Academic year 2012-2013 or for Autumn Semester 2012
- October 15, 2012 for Spring Semester 2013
- Late applications will not be considered!
- Autumn Semester: September 1, 2011 - December 31, 2011
- Spring Semester: January 1, 2012 - May 31, 2012
- Academic year: August 1, 2011– July 31, 2012
- Please check and observe the Orientation Course dates and the teaching periods of the University of Helsinki (see below).
- August 31 - September 1, 2011
- Please note that in autumn semester dormitories at Leppäsuonkatu 9, Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 29, Hietaniemenkatu 14 and Vuolukiventie 1 are available only from 2 pm (14:00 hours) on September 1. Adjust your arrival accordningly.
- January 3-5, 2012.
- If your accommodation is in HOAS buildings, please note that HOAS office in Kamppi is open only during week days from Monday to Friday at 9:00 am. - 4:00 pm. (9:00-16:00 hours).
- Keys:
- Please arrange your arrival so, that you have time to get your keys from HOAS office in Kamppi, Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 29 (serves most of the international students)
- If your accommodation is in Kannelmäki (Kitarakuja and Klaneettitie) the HOAS office is in Kannelmäki at Kitarakuja 1. Opening hours of the HOAS office in Kannelmäki from Monday to Friday 1 pm. - 4 pm. (13:00-16:00 hours).
Exchange Period and Housing Period
1) Students planning to take courses for 1 semester or 2 semesters
- Students must arrive in Helsinki according the semesters of the University of Helsinki, e.g. before the Orientation Course and courses start
- Exception: Some Erasmus agreements have been made only for 3 months, in these cases shorter exchange period is possible
2) Students planning to do research, laboratory work, clinical training or equivalent and no courses during the exchange period
- Period can be different than the semesters
- The applicant must give the reasons for this exceptional exchange period on the application form, and the period must always be agreed with the faculty and department of the University of Helsinki.
Housing period: Housing period is usually the same than the exchange period. Housing is for fixed-period, and it can’t be changed.

The University of Helsinki arranges teaching in the most of its faculties in periodical system. Teaching Periods vary from Faculty to Faculty.
Please note that you have to arrive in Helsinki before the Orientation Course and courses start. It is usually not possible to arrive in the middle of a period and then have a place on the courses.

Examinations
Please note that there are no special examination periods at the University of Helsinki.
Course Examinations are held at the end of the courses. It is usually possible to take examinations once a month (faculty examinations). You will get more information on the Orientation Course.
