Stanford's Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) celebrates its 18th birthday this year. The center was set up in 1983 with a gift of $23 million from the System Development Foundation. In this rapid overview, I'll describe how it was formed, what the original goals were, what the System Development Foundation was, what has happened at CSLI since then, what activities are going on there now, and where the center is likely to go in the future.
* Keith Devlin has been a senior researcher at CSLI since 1987. In June of this year, he became Executive Director of the center.
