Dialog Description Languages: Annotations of Dialogs and Specification of Dialog Systems

Gregor Erbach
Section: Language and Computation
Level: Introductory

Description

The course will introduce description languages for the linguistic annotation of spoken dialogs, as well as languages for the specification of spoken dialog systems. The course will start with an introduction of spoken dialog systems, and will outline the role of linguistic resources in the development of a spoken dialogue application. It will introduce the MATE (Multilevel Annotations Tools Engineering) framework for the annotation of dialogs and various languages for the specification of spoken dialog systems, among them VoiceXML. MATE provides a XML-based multi-level dialog annotation framework, which supports a number of existing coding schemes for prosody, morpho-syntax, dialog acts, coreference, communication problems and cross-level annotations. VoiceXML is an (evolving) industry standard for the specification of spoken dialog systems.
