Welcome to English Philology!
English Philology at the University of Helsinki is a genuinely international unit devoted to quality and versatility in teaching and in research.
Teaching and research
Our teaching and research have a broad focus ranging from linguistics and philology to translation and literary studies. Our many partners include research units and exchange universities all over the world, and our conferences attract visitors worldwide.
In addition to our multinational staff, English Philology regularly hosts visiting lecturers and scholars from both national and international universities. Our Research Unit for Variation, Contacts and Change in English (VARIENG) was an Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence. In two external evaluations of research of the University of Helsinki (1999 and 2005) the English Philology (Department of English) received the highest possible rating.
Each year some 60 new major students are admitted to English Philology, some 50 students graduate as Masters of Arts, and about three postgraduate students defend their Doctoral theses. English philology is also an extremely popular minor subject. Our graduates are versatile experts in language and culture who find careers as teachers, translators, researchers and international administrators.
